Maiastra July 2025 Concert Series Captivates Maiastra Audiences

Sunday, July 27, 2025

The musicians found their week with Maiastra inspiring, ending with three fantastic performances across Surrey and West London.

The Maiastra July 2025 concert series was a resounding success, showcasing the talents of a string quartet led by Course Director Akiko Ono. Violinist Sasha Parker, violist Jimena Barrio-Briones, and cellist Gabriel Webb joined Akiko for three captivating performances across Surrey and West London.

The ensemble performed at Maiastra's much-loved venues; The Musical Museum in Brentford, Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames, and finally St Andrew’s Church in Cobham. At each concert, audiences were treated to an expressive and lyrical programme of chamber music, featuring Haydn’s String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 50 No. 1, Dvořák’s String Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 51, and Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D major.

All three performances were warmly received, with enthusiastic feedback from audience members who praised the ensemble’s musical cohesion and sensitivity. Many highlighted the Borodin quartet as a particular standout, commending the players’ lyrical interpretation and emotional depth.

The concert series marked the culmination of an intensive week-long course under Akiko Ono’s guidance. The musicians lived and worked together at a picturesque barn in the heart of the Surrey Hills, immersing themselves fully in the study and rehearsal of chamber music.

Reflecting on their experience, the musicians shared their thoughts on their week with Maiastra:

“We had such an amazing week here at Maiastra! It’s been such an inspiring experience, we’ve learned so much, and it has given us the tools we need to keep exploring chamber music in our futures.

Thank you so much for all your hard work that makes this possible”.
